This print comes from a private collection and has been professionally framed. I will leave the frame around it for now to prevent damage. However, the print is sent without a frame.
Original Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) - Shinmon versus Koganai, 1894
Description:
Scene from a Kabuki play entitled Shinmon versus Kogamai performed at the Ichimura Theater in Tokyo in 1894. Two firefighters, Koganai Kōjirō (shown right), played by actor Onoe Kikugorō V, and Shinmon Tatsugorō, played by Nakamura Shikan IV, are extinguishing a blazing fire with buckets and ladders. Tatsugorō was the head of the Ogumi Fire Department and one of the last otokadate.
The play is inspired by the true story of two convicted murderers who saved the lives of many prisoners on New Year's Day 1846 when a huge fire spread across Edo and reached the prison in Ishikawashima.
