Original Toyohara Kunichika (1835 - 1900), Japanese woodblock print, depicting Ichikawa Sadanji I as Orochimaru, the son of the Giant Snake. It is the right sheet of a kabuki triptych.
Description:
A beautiful kabuki scene of the evil Orochimaru, son of the Giant Snake. Orochimaru looks angry, a fierce horned demon mask in his hand and a huge snake looming behind him, its red tongue flickering out. He lifts a robe over his head, decorated with diamonds that mimic the scales of a snake, and his bushy hair sticks out above his head. A beautiful supernatural design with excellent detail, including the metallic pigment that has been oxidized to a dark tone on the triangular pattern on the white robe.
Specifications:
Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (unsigned)
Date: Meiji period, 1891
Size in cm: 36.4 h and 25 b
Condition of the print:
Heritage with character. Heavily weathered with restorations and obvious damage, but still a window to another era. It has grease, stains, (water?) damage, signs of repairs and holes. A print that has survived its journey through the centuries. The print is an antique item. I would like to refer to the pictures of the offer.
