Original Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) - Natsumatsuri Naniwa Kagami, 1850.

Original Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) - Actor Onoe Tamizô II as Giheiji (right) and Nakamura Utaemon IV as Danshichi Kurobei (left).

Description: Fantastic kabuki scene from the play "Natsumatsuri Naniwa kagami", in which the otokodate threatens Danshichi Kurobei Mikawaya Giheiji. In the play, Danshichi gets into a fight with Giheiji, his father-in-law, and eventually kills him. Here the older man stumbles backwards and falls to the ground as he tries to get away from his irate son-in-law. Danshichi holds a sword and hesitates for only a moment, knowing full well that the crime he is about to commit is punishable by death. His bare torso reveals a fantastic tattoo of a dragon.

A great image from this famous piece and a great choice for a collector interested in tattoo subjects.
