Originele Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanse houtsnededruk De monnik Ikkyu en de helcourtisane, 1854.
Description:
Interesting kabuki scene with the monk Ikkyu and Jigoku Dayu (literally: Hell Courtesan). Ikkyu converted the beauty of a life of prostitution. Here the beauty holds a long letter that Ikkyu has draped over his head. She grins at him as he looks back at her with a matter-of-fact expression under his shaggy eyebrows. Her kimono is decorated with a scene from Hell, with a green-horned demon cooking a man in a vat over a roaring fire, and Emma-O, the Lord of the Underworld, sitting at a desk as he judges the dead. A great design.
