Kotoshironushi (事代主神), also known as Yae Kotoshironushi no kami (八重言代主神), is a Shinto kami.
In the Kojiki, Kotoshironushi is the son of Ōkuninushi, the earthly deity of Izumo province. When the Heavenly Gods sent Takemikazuchi to conquer Izumo, Ōkuninushi deferred the decision of whether to resist to his two sons. Kotoshironushi, who was fishing at the time Takemikazuchi arrived, agreed to accept the rule of the Heavenly Gods, surrendered his spear and left Izumo. His brother Takeminakata fought with Takemikazuchi and was defeated.
Kotoshironushi is the main deity of the Asuka Shrine and is associated with the god Ebisu. In mythology, he was an advisor to Empress Jingū during her invasion of Korea. He was also one of the eight gods charged with protecting the imperial court. His daughter Himetataraisuzu-hime became Emperor Jimmu's consort.
Description:
This mask from Kotoshironushi no Mikoto is a vintage carved wooden base with a lacquer layer. Noh mask carving was established as a hereditary art by the family, and this piece was by a sculptor named Tanabe Seiyu (田邉聖祐).
Bicchu Kagura is a local performing art mainly performed in the Bicchu region of Okayama Prefecture.
Because he is considered a god who 'knows things', he is considered a deity or oracle, which means an event. However, he is more commonly worshiped as the god of fishing and plentiful catches, as he was a fisherman during the transfer of the land to Izumo. He is more often worshiped as the god of prosperity and business.
