Kazuwa Yaki (上神焼) / Iga or Shigaraki is a traditional Japanese pottery style originating from Tottori Prefecture, with a history spanning over 250 years. It is one of the most important folk arts (mingei) of the region.
Located in Kurayoshi City, the Kazuwa pottery (kamamoto) is a family-run business that has continued the tradition for generations. This tradition is known for its use of local clay and techniques such as cinnabar glaze, as well as innovative methods like pearas glaze, made from the local nashi pear trees.
Description:
The handle vase (teoke), used for ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), is made by Japanese potter Nakamori Funyu (中森不入), a master of the Kazuwa tradition from Tottori Prefecture. The name Funyu (不入) is the potter's name (gō) of the artist. The current (third generation) master potter is called Nakamori Hakuga (中森伯雅).
The vase is made of coarse, iron-rich clay and has a natural ash glaze (shizen-yu) and reddish-brown spots (hiiro) typical of wood-fired Japanese pottery of the Iga and Shigaraki styles.
The piece has an authentic potter's seal (kamajirushi) on the base and comes in a signed wooden storage box (tomobako). The seal under the vase and on the box is the potter's mark for Kazuwa Yaki (上神焼).
