Antique Japanese pottery Chōrei-beshimi mask.
This mask is of the type known as beshimi, due to its tightly closed mouth. Beshimi is a demon who usually appears in dance dramas about a fierce but ultimately benevolent being. The beshimi mask is without a doubt one of the most intriguing masks used in nō theater.
The Chorei beshimi is used in the Noh program called Kumasaka and represents the ancient robber Kumasaka Chohan. The name is derived from a Noh mask artist named Chorei.
