Hontō op de Tattoo Conventie Groningen - Een thuiswedstrijd vol inspiratie

Hontō at the Tattoo Convention Groningen - A home game full of inspiration

Last weekend I had the honor to be present as a vendor with my webshop Hontō at the legendary tattoo convention in the Forum Groningen. This exhibition marked the official opening of the exhibition TATTOO, curated by none other than Henk Schiffmacher.

An unexpected opportunity

It wasn't months of preparation. In fact, a week before the convention I didn't even know I would be there. On Friday I was asked if I was available every day. The following Monday the confirmation came: there was room for me. I didn't even have business cards yet, because Hontō is a purely online shop up until now. But that will probably change.

A real home game

Normally I pack my suitcase, get in the car or the plane for a tattoo convention. But this time I walked with a trolley from my shop to the Forum. A few minutes walk. That made it extra special. Groningen is my city and this felt like a symbolic moment for Hontō.

Legendary tattoo convention in the Forum

Why do I call this convention legendary? Because the tattoo artists that Henk Schiffmacher selected for this weekend are all greats. Some indicated that this was their last joint performance. It was truly a unique gathering of international tattoo culture. Probably the last time that so many well-known and famous names could be found together under one roof.

Hontō live at Oost 4

My stand was at Oost 4, near the entrance to the exhibition. A beautiful place. People first came by out of curiosity, but after viewing the exhibition they came back with recognition: "Now I understand why you sell those books, masks and prints."

It was a bit like exit through the gift shop, but sincere and it was appreciated by everyone.

Inspiring conversations and great encounters

I had fantastic conversations. With Henk Schiffmacher, about Japanese books, ukiyo-e prints and about the exhibition of Willem Gulik in Leiden years ago. But also with other tattoo artists, collectors and visitors with a passion for Japanese art and tattoo heritage.

I sold prints, masks and books, made spontaneous deals with Ichibay and others and had great business conversations about collaborations. There is always room to help each other and grow together. This is why I started Hontō.

A weekend to never forget

These were three unforgettable days. I met my heroes, spoke to old friends and made new contacts. I would like to thank Henk Schiffmacher and the team of the Forum Groningen very much for letting me be part of this.

And of course: thanks to everyone who came by, showed interest in my products, and talked to me about the story behind Hontō.

Hontō ni arigato!

Have you seen the TATTOO exhibition yet?

The exhibition will run until January 2026. After that, this international expo will disappear into the archives for good.

With every purchase in my shop you will receive a 50% discount ticket for the exhibition, while supplies last. This way you can see for yourself where my inspiration comes from.

About Hontō

Hontō is still in its infancy. My webshop was created out of love for Japanese art, tattoo culture and craft objects. From books to handmade masks. Maybe it's time to set up a physical place soon...
